The House of Nire
Published in Paperback by Kodansha International (September, 1997)
Authors: Morio Kita and Dennis Keene
Average review score:

an epic comedy...subtle and tragic
This is a wonderful book which deserves to be more widely read. An epic yet subtle comedy packed full of memorable characters.

The House Of Nire charts the rise and fall of a Japanese family who run a mental institution on the outskirts of Tokyo. In the early part of the book the family are full of pretention and their own importance to comical effect but as the novel progresses they are gradually met with hardship and tragedy.

In terms of size and scope, together with its slightly off-kilter viewpoint, this reminds me of John Irving. The way in which characters early in the book still have an impact on those remaining at the end is very Irving.

The often bleak tone of the book when the family are at their lowest and the rich characterisation was almost Dickensian.

Also, the tragi-comedy set in a lumbering insitution was reminiscent of Gormenghast. Infact both books begin with a bizarre chef working in a steamy kitchen.

Within the book there are some exemplary pieces of writing. The story of a Japanese soldier on board an aircraft carrier on the way to attack Pearl Harbour is one of the finest pieces of war fiction I have ever read and it was fascinating to see a different perspective on that part of the war.

The story of a Japanese doctor in Weimar Germany was also fascinating as we see the early stages of the rise of Hitler from the Japanese viewpoint.

Often laugh out loud funny, often truly tragic, this is a marvelous novel of epic proportions and is very much an undiscovered classic.

I strongly urge you to try this out.

Learn from the Grandmasters
Published in Paperback by David & Charles (June, 1975)
Author: R.D. Keene
Average review score:

Truly a Chess Classic
This book is a clasic in the sense that top GM's M.Tal, V. Korchnoi, Y. Seirawan, J. Timman, B. Larsen and J. Speelman all take part and introduce they're all time favorite games with annotations! The book is very entertaining. I wouldn't recommend it as a studying book thogh since the annotations aren't very deep, but the games in themselves are very beautifal. A must for any serious chess enthusiast.

Man Versus Machine: Kasparov Versus Deep Blue
Published in Paperback by H3 Publications (May, 1997)
Authors: David Goodman and Raymond Keene
Average review score:

A useful begining for understanding computer chess
Being the author of a chess program, and a chess enthusiast, I liked this book. It did not go into as much depth on how Deep Blue works as some other books on computer chess. However, it did provide a good commentary on each of the games that would help a rather inexpierenced player understand the match. In short, it is a good introduction to computer chess and the famous games between Kasparov and Deep Blue.

Mrs. Donald
Published in Hardcover by Chatto & Windus (May, 1984)
Author: Mary Keene
Average review score:

Mrs. Donald is a lonely woman!
This little book is a huge description of a tragic woman, filled with rage which we would now diagnose asmenopausal. Nonetheless, Mary Keene's exploration & semi-autobiographic story of a mother out of control & the ways her children cope with her & their needs to leave home is evocative, thrilling & does have redemption in the end. A difficult yet rewarding read - available in England...

A Great Book
I think this is a great book. The begining is a little boring, but the middle takes an un-expected twist, that makes it even better. Buffalo or Bison may seem like a boring subject but you would be amazed what Carolyn Keene can do with it, and thats not all this book is about. IT'S GREAT!
